Part I: Review Introductions and Conclusions (9:30-10:00)
1. Get into pairs and open the document titled Strategies
for Writing Good Introductions and Conclusions. We will then discuss
your answers as a class.
2. Next, you will read two sample essays -- “Changing
English: the African American Influence” and “Climbing High
Rockies” and answer the corresponding questions from the handout Diagnostic
Quiz: Writing Introduction and Conclusions. You will then share your
answers with the class. The key is posted here as well.
Supporting Details Activity (10:00-10:20)
3. Now we will take another look at one of those same essays from the start of class, “Climbing High Rockies” and try to answer the questions which follow. The questions ask what the purpose of each paragraph is, and to list any supporting details they have found. After, we will check the KEY for the answers.
Types of Supporting Evidence commonly used:
- facts
- statistics
- personal experiences
- anecdotes
- observations
- analogies
- etc.
Part II: PIE (10:20-10:50)
