Part I: Lecture [9:30-10:10 (40min)]
A) Starting A Summary (10min)
Open up the PowerPoint Presentation for today and follow along as we begin with a discussion on getting started to summary writing. Slides 1-6 will relate to this topic and will cover Pre-writing strategies and first sentence examples.
B) Body and Concluding A Summary (20 min)
Slides 7-14 will discuss structures and features that go within the body and conclusion of a summary. There will be a sample summary paragraph in which you will be asked to identify the relevant main ideas.
C) Summary Verb Tenses+ Error Analysis (10 min)
Slides 15-20 address three of the most common ways in which Tenses play a role in Summary Writing. Then, you will ask you to identify a common error in summary writing. This will be followed by a short corrective lecture.
Part II: Mini Peer Review [10:10-10:35 (25min)]
In this part of the class, we will get into pairs and spend a brief 10 minutes giving “Global” feedback. Global feedback means that we will focus on the larger structural aspects of the paper and not the details such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I will be handing each person a Peer ReviewHandout that they should discuss/fill out with their partner. In about 12 minutes, I will have you switch computers to look at your partner’s paragraph.
Part III: The Grammar of Summary Verbs [10:35-10:50 (15min)]
Verbs are an essential part of English. Every complete sentence is required to have a verb. Thus, because we always write in complete sentences, mastering the skill of using academic verbs is crucial for effective graduate-level writing. For this last part of today’s class, we will be taking a closer look at some verbs common to summary writing. Click here to access this handout. You can disregard the first two pages as we will just be looking at pages 2-4. After I give a brief lecture on the content of this handout, I will ask you to chose an appropriate verb from the handout to fill in the following three sentences:
- Table 1 ___________ the frequency distribution of virus encounters.
- Table 1____________ that 99% of all companies had at least one virus encounter during the survey period.
- Table 1 ___________ that computer virus encounters are a major problem for businesses.
+++++
Time permitting, I will ask you to use the verbs from the examples given on page 4 to create sentences that 1) Report the following information and 2) Contrast the authors
Author: Betsy Divine
Kimchee is a delightful pickeled cabbage dish common to the North and South Korean Cuisine.
Author: Jin Kim
Kimchee, a food common to Koreans, has a strong foul odor and is overly spicy.
