Day 9: Quoting and How to Identify Plagiarism (80mn)


Objectives: Students will be able to:
·                     Recognize what plagiarism is and its possible consequences
·                     Recognize needs and ways to use outer sources without plagiarism
·                     Learn and practice quoting a source

Warm Up: (5mn)
Take a look at your homework on Writing about Data....

Part I: Who is the odd one out? (5mn)
I will have you look at a set of pictures in groups of three or four and ask you to find “the odd one out”. We will then discuss some famous plagiarizers. The answer key is located here.

Part II: Identifying Plagiarism (5mn)
In small groups, discuss the following questions.

1.    What is plagiarism?
2.    What are the possible consequences if you get caught plagiarizing?
3.    In what situations are you guilty of plagiarism?

Part III: Plagiarism Quiz (10mn)
In groups of 3 or 4, work together to complete the Plagiarism Quiz. We’ll check the answers as a class. 


Part IV: Difference in Quoting Paraphrasing and Summarizing. (20 minutes)

We will go over the this handout together.

Then we will discuss and practice using quotes to support our information. Please look to the handout titled, “In Text Citation Worksheet” and work in pairs to complete the three parts.

Part V: How to avoid Plagiarism: (10 minutes)
Look to the handout titled, “How to Avoid Plagiarism.” In this handout, you will have a closer look at student C’s writing sample. Go through #1~4, and analyze how a source is integrated into the essay without committing plagiarism. You can do this in pairs first and check the answers as a class. The answers are listed here.

Part VI: How to Cite Sources Review (30 minutes)
 In groups of 3 or 4, go over the “How to Cite Sources” handout #1~3. Go over the answers as a class. Then we will do some basic practice on quoting.
