Day 11: Paraphrasing, Quoting, and Summaries + APA

Class Objective:
  • Learn/Practice paraphrasing quoting, and summary and how they differ in terms of wording, length, purpose, and usage.

Part I: Review   9:30-9:45 [15 min]
First let's take a look at a revised version of last week's handout. Possible answers to the bottom questions can be found here.

Remember, quotes are primarily used when:

1) another writer's language is particularly memorable and will add interest and liveliness to your paper.

2) another writer's language is so clear and economical that to make the same point in your own words would, by comparison, be ineffective.

3) you want the solid reputation of a source to lend authority and credibility to your own writing.

Here I have placed a link with multiple academic ways to introduce a source if full information is needed. Take a look.

Part II: Homework Check     9:45-10:00  [15 min]
Look to the homework handout titled, “How to Avoid Plagiarism.” we will be going over the content together as a class. The answers are listed here.

The other piece of homework assigned was the “How to Cite Sources” handout. I will be collecting them to see that students are reviewing the materials.  The answers are listed here.

Part II: Analyzing Paraphrasing   10:00- 10:15  [15 min]
Now, we will be analyzing some paraphrased texts in terms of their quality as well briefly practicing paraphrasing one paragraph. First you will need to get into pairs. One person in your pair will be need the ‘Student A’ document and the other half ‘Student B’. As a class we will go over the directions together. Then, in your pairs you will determine the quality of the paraphrased samples A, B, C. Then we will share our reasoning with the class.

Part III: Partner Gap-Fill    10:15- 10:25  [10 min]
Without showing your partner your handout, turn to page two of your document. You will need to fill in the blanks of your document. Your partner has the answers you need and you have the answers that they need.I will be giving you 10 minutes to ask each other questions in order to find the appropriate information to fill in the gaps. DO NOT JUST SHOW OR TELL THE ANSWERS!

Part IV: Sample Practice Paraphrasing    10:25-10: 45  [20 min]
In this last part of the handout, we will work individually to paraphrase the sample paragraph  Try to use the strategies discussed in class. Then, you will share your paragraph with your partner, providing feedback on their work,

The answers to this handout are posted here. Also, If you would like more information on successful and unsuccessful paraphrase, please see the following website: http://writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/QPA_paraphrase.html

Part V: Discuss upcoming assignment   10:45- 10:50  [5 min]
Please take a look at the handout titled "APA cheat sheet" under additional course materials. This gives  very brief overview of how APA citations work. For Thursday, we will start with a brief discussion on APA. Your homework for Thursday is related to that topic.
