Day 8: Coherence Continued
Lesson Objectives:- Understand and practice the strategies of Old/New information patterns for coherence.
- Understand and practice using Subordinators, Conjunctions, and Transitions words to increase coherence.
- Analyze how these writing techniques can be applied to our fields of study.
Part I: Completion of Mini Peer Review (9:00- 9:15min)
Please get back into your small groups from Tuesday and follow along to the directions of this mini peer review. Remember that we are only concerned with giving feedback on the following topics:
1) Thesis Statement
2) Topic Sentences
3) Introduction
Part II: Coherence Practice with Old/New Information Patterns (9:15-9:45)
On Tuesday, we discussed the importance and meaning of coherence. In groups, brainstorm some ways that coherence can be better achieved in our writing. What are some of the strategies we discussed on Tuesday? Today we will continue discussing show these trategies enable us to better the coherence or "flow" of our papers.
1. Turn to the page titled Coherence Practice in your handout from Tuesday. We will work through these practice activities together.
2. Remember that is pattern can be combined with other strategies, such as transitions:

Part III: Coherence Practice with Subordinates and Transitions. (9:45-10:45)
For the last part of class we will be analyzing and practicing how both Subordinates and Transitions aid us in achieving more complex coherence writing. A particular emphasis will be place on the integration of data into papers.
1. Refer to the handout I will give you in class or click on the link Analyzing Data and follow along as we go through the examples and activies.
The focus of this handout is to:
- Understand the semantic meaning of Subordinators, Transitions, and Conjunctions.
- Practice using them to achieve specific semantic outcomes.
- Understand how they relate to the use of data and facts in academic writing.
