Day 22: Debate Skills + Debate Setup

Objectives:
  • Analyze basic skills needed for effective presentations
  • Become (more) comfortable talking in front of the class
  • Practice basic structures associated with debate language
  • Understand expectations for upcoming group debate in class

Part I: Warm up [9:30-9:40 (10 min)]
Click here to access today's PowerPoint. You may follow along on your own computer or on the big screen. To begin today's lesson, we will have a discussion on what is needed to be a strong speaker.

Part II: Activity #1 [9:40-10:00 (20 min)]
In this first speaking activity, we will each mock a few sentences from a debate in pairs. Try your best to practice good strong speaking practices by being clear, loud, and lively with your words and body language. After this basic practice, each pair will repeat their sentence with a problematic area that we need to identify on the big screen. I want to see some strong actors! :)

Part III: Activity #2 Video [10:00-10:15 (15 min)]
In this part of today's class, we will watch a short video and analyze the speakers in terms of their tone, body language, volume, and speed. Keep notes of what you see in the video and share it with your group members.

Part IV: Speaking Drill [10:15-10:25 (10 min)]
In this brief and fun activity, we will practice different types of debate responses. You will be given a list of debate statements in pairs. Student A will say the statement and Student B will respond. Student B needs to respond in a way that matches the response on Student A's car. If their response does not match, they need to continue trying until it does. Look to the powerpoint side 8 for choices on how to respond.  Pay attention the model example so you understand! Don't cheat and look at each other's papers!

Part V: Debate Introductions [10:25-10:30 (5 min)]
Time permitting, we will watch a second video that demonstrates how to set up a proper speech introduction. It is very similar to written introductions! If we do not have time, you can watch the video on your own at home.

Part VI: Getting Ready for the debate [10:30-10:50 (20min)]
In the last part of the class, you will be assigned your roles for the next class and understand the process involved for the upcoming debate. I will be giving you time in groups to work on organizing your ideas.
